Symptoms, Risks and When to Get Care
RSV is a common respiratory virus that spreads mostly in fall and winter. Most people recover in a week or two, but it can be serious for infants, young children and older adults.
RSV often looks like a cold at first. Symptoms can include:
Infants, especially those under 6 months, and adults 60 and older face the highest risk of serious illness. People with weakened immune systems or chronic heart or lung disease are also at higher risk.
Wash hands often, clean shared surfaces and keep sick children home. Ask your provider whether an RSV vaccine or preventive antibody is right for you or your baby.
Visit urgent care if symptoms are getting worse, a fever will not come down or your child is drinking less than usual. Go to the emergency room for trouble breathing, bluish lips or signs of dehydration.
