How to Handle the Stomach Bug
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus and the most common cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the United States. It spreads quickly in homes, schools and workplaces.
Symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last one to three days:
Wash your hands with soap and water, since hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus. Clean surfaces with a bleach-based cleaner, wash laundry in hot water and avoid preparing food for others until at least two days after symptoms end.
The biggest risk with norovirus is dehydration. Sip water, broth or oral rehydration drinks often, especially for young children and older adults.
